We didn't quite make my minimal goal of 600 miles per day. We only got to 437 miles before we received a gaggle of phone calls from concerned relatives about a dangerous thunder storm in Shreveport Louisiana where we were going to spend our first night.
Shreveport is about 175 miles west of Vicksburg Mississippi where we rented a room at a the Quality Inn. Once we got settled in, we checked out the weather channel and discovered that parts of I-20 near Shreveport had been closed down for flooding. They had received 14 inches of rain and are expecting another 10 inches during the night. High winds blew a church steeple onto a car, severely injuring the 57 year old driver. There are numerous auto accidents and almost continuous tornado warnings in Shreveport.
The town we are staying in is expecting some thunderstorms tonight, some possibly severe but nothing like further west on I-20. So, even though I wanted to put a couple hundred more miles behind us, it is probably good that we stopped. Just in case.
Otherwise, the drive earlier was quite scenic and pleasant, and the kids handled the lack of physical activity quite nicely.
We gained an hour today but my body is still running on Eastern Time.
Time for bed. I need some decent sleep for the long drive tomorrow.
