I can't believe that I travelled almost 775 miles yesterday!
Today, I'm hoping to get close enough to Sacramento California to be able to apply for my California license tomorrow. It's possible, but it will entail another very long day of driving and my mother's body is starting to protest the long hours of riding.
We spent last night in Tucson Arizona. We would have stopped earlier, but in between the large cities, there are absolutely no motels to stop at! I'm talking that you can go a hundred miles or more and not find a motel. The exits in between the big cities are so pitch black, eerily silent and desolate that I won't stop even for a quick smoke.
During the day yesterday, mom and I stopped outside of El Paso, at another one of those desolate exits. It was broad daylight and there was an abandoned dinner there that was roped off with a sign saying that they were closed for renovations.
Halfway through our cigarettes, a jeep that said, 'Border Patrol' turned down the dusty road in front of us. The policeman slowed to check us out and then waved and drove on. It was at that moment that I realized that we were a stone's throw from Mexico.
To be continued.....
(Sorry, time to hit the road for the day...
