West Hollywood

We made it!

With all of the flurry of driving, checking in and out of motels, unloading and reloading my van every day to prevent people breaking into it, and sightseeing, I have been way to tired and busy to post anything. But now, I am slowing down because we are finally in West Hollywood and will be formally moving into our apartment tomorrow at 8am.

We arrived in West Hollywood on Friday and checked into a little hotel called The Orbit Hotel on Melrose Avenue.  It's a very interesting little hotel and the cheapest in the area at $69 a night.  It reminds me of a lodging place you'd find in Europe.

Set up like an old boarding house, it attracts mostly a young crowd of travelers who are mostly in their 20's and 30's.  Half of them are Europeans.  Words I'd use to describe the place and the people are bohemian, eclectic preppie, hippie etc.

Breakfast is free.  In a huge kitchen, you help yourself to cereal and toast, and huge containers of butter and peanut butter are open with knives in them so you can dig some spread out for your toast.

There are two giant sitting rooms where the kids gather to chat, or watch whatever movie is playing, or bang away at their laptops.  And last night the hotel sponsered a $5 spaghetti dinner followed by a well known DJ spinning oldies with free beer and wine for all.

This place ffeels very comfortable and friendly and the guests act like friends and socialize in the two big rooms or on the outdoor patios.  The whole place is very old and quaint.  A great deal for the price.

I gave my mother $5 last night to go downstairs and get change in the change machine so she could buy us some snacks and drinks.  She came back saying she'd lost my $5 because she'd thought that one of the numerous 'pay per hour' computers which are scattered all over the hotel, was a change machine and she'd put my $5 in it and bought 1 hour of internet time.

I laughed my butt off, thinking of how she must have looked standing next to that computer waiting for change for her money.

A French guy was walking by while she was showing me the machine and we gave him the Internet time instead of wasting it.

Well, tomorrow we move into our apartment at 8am.  Today we are going to check out the two big Farmer's Markets.  The original Farmers Market, and then the new Farmers Market at the Grove.  I believe that there is a free trollly car that takes you between the two markets, so we'll make use of that.  Also, the markets are well known for attracting movie stars.  I'm going to have to be observant as we walk around so I don't miss anything or anyone exciting.

I'll be posting pictures on all of these blog entries as soon as I download them onto my laptop.

Off for some relaxing fun!
